Analysis of polymer impurities
The Filtratest is used to check the purity and accurately determine foreign particle concentrations in spinnable polymers (e.g. PET, PA) and other thermoplastic melts.
The melt flows through a fine-meshed filter disc, in which the foreign particles are gradually deposited. The deposited dirt particles increase the pressure, which is measured by transducers and recorded during the measurement.
Subsequent analysis of the sieves allows indications of the type and quantity of polymer contamination.
The Filtratest is connected to a measuring extruder with a melt pump. The polymer to be tested is melted and homogenized in the extruder and fed to the melt pump. This conveys the material at a constant flow rate through the multi-layer, fine-mesh screen pack of the Filtratest. A pressure transmitter in front of the screen pack continuously measures the melt pressure in front of the screen pack.
Due to the deposited dirt particles, the melt pressure increases. The pressure filter value FPV is automatically calculated from the initial pressure and the maximum pressure upstream of the screen pack. The subsequent analysis of the residues on the screens provides additional information on the type and quantity of impurities in the melt.
