Practice-oriented plastification under processing conditions

All slot capillary dies are highly polished and have a coating against corrosion and abrasion.

A precise description of the flow processes within polymer processing machines implies exact knowledge of the rheological characteristics of polymer melts, in particular of their viscosity behaviour within a wide, practice-oriented range of shear rates.

The Brabender® capillary rheometer system, consisting of a laboratory extruder with a suitable drive unit, a rheometric capillary die head, and a high-precision melt pump covers a practice-oriented range of shear rates and allows reliable statements about the material behaviour during different processing stages. The advantages compared to conventional high-pressure capillary rheometers are evident:

Swelltest die head

Mounting and interchanging of the die heads at the extruder or Extrusiograph® is very easy: just fix them with the ring nut at the extruder barrel. The die heads are made of extremely corrosion-resistant steel and are heated electrically in the standard version. However, if you need a liquid heated design for a special application, just ask us. All die heads have threaded bores for taking melt temperature and/or pressure transducers. Most of the die heads can be used vertically and horizontally.

The width/height ratio of the slot capillary is designed so that edge effects of the capillary side walls can be neglected.

The 3-stage slot capillary die with its step-by-step reduced capillary height creates three shear rates, i.e. three viscosities at a time with a constant volumetric flow. Get part of a viscosity curve and assess the flow behavior of the melt already from a single measurement.

The principle of the 2-stage slot capillary die is the same as for the 3-stage die. Yet, with only two different capillary heights, this die is smaller and easier to handle. Connect these multi-step die heads via a melt pump directly to the production extruder and determine the viscosity or viscosity changes of your material online.

For calculating the Bagley correction for entrance effects, we recommend to run the tests with three capillary dies of equal diameter, but different L/D ratios. The round capillary die head is equipped with a pressure sensor and a thermocouple. Capillary in serts can be interchanged quickly and easily.
