Background of the study: The problem
The demand for salmonoids (salmon fish) and trout is steadily increasing. These fish species require a particularly high fat content feed.
The high fat content of the aquaculture feed has an influence on the stability and quality of the pellets produced. In addition, oxidation of the fats must be prevented.
This is done in a cost-intensive post-treatment step: vacuum coating.
The hypothesis
Silica absorbs fat and stabilizes the starch structure by network formation.
The addition of silica influences the processing conditions during extrusion
and thus the resulting properties of the pellets.
The objective
Determination of the influence of silica content/concentration on the
processing conditions, pellet abrasion and grease leakage in pellets with high fat content.
The cooperation
In cooperation with Evonik, we have devoted ourselves to the subject in this study.
The application poster documents the analyses carried out.
The test series with Brabender analyzers and the different silica samples of our cooperation partner Evonik resulted in a method nominated for the GRAPAS INNOVATIONS AWARDS.
Details of the study can be found in the application poster.
